Revolutionizing Space: Buna Sartoria by TALLER ADG

Unveiling the Unique Design of Buna Sartoria, a Coffee Shop and Restaurant

Discover Buna Sartoria, a unique fusion of a coffee shop and restaurant, designed by TALLER ADG. Inspired by old Italian trattorias, the design offers a warm, inviting ambiance through its innovative use of space and materials.

TALLER ADG's Buna Sartoria project is a masterful blend of architecture and design, creating two distinct spaces within a shared environment. The design concept was inspired by the warmth and charm of old Italian trattorias, with the aim of creating a similar atmosphere in a modern setting. The result is a unique space that houses both a coffee shop, Buna, and a restaurant, Sartoria, each with its own distinct personality.

The design's unique properties lie in its innovative use of space. The project provides a solution for two adjacent commercial spaces, sharing access, foyer, and services. The main design principle was to create a vault that provided a sensation of warmth. Buna’s space is solved by tilting the vault shape, generating a curved wall that provides a sense of continuity in such a small space. This play of arches forms the personalities for two different concepts.

The realization of this design was achieved through the use of concrete formwork, which provides a vault for the restaurant and a central bar for the coffee shop space. The floor is polished concrete, and the bar tops are black and white marble, respectively. The design specifications include a dimension of 100 square meters, making efficient use of the available space.

The design interaction is facilitated by a sliding glass door that provides access to both spaces through a small foyer. Buna’s space features a 3.28 meter-long central bar, while Sartoria is defined by the vault, 5.60 meters wide by 5 in length, covering an area that holds 25 guests. The vault’s curve and back wall were used to create a wine cellar that holds 250 bottles. The terrace is common to both spaces, further enhancing the shared yet distinct nature of the two spaces.

The project, which took eight months to complete, was carried out in Mexico City. The design research was mainly based on the existing materiality and textures, with an emphasis on strong materials that work in aesthetic terms. The design challenge was to provide a solution in a very small property for two adjacent commercial spaces that are separate but share access, foyer, and services.

This design has been recognized for its innovation and creativity, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
